The Lammergeier, also known as the Bearded Vulture, is one of the most striking and mysterious birds of the Himalayas. With its massive wingspan, fiery orange plumage, and unique bone-eating diet, this raptor is a true spectacle of the skies. Often seen soaring effortlessly above rugged cliffs and deep valleys, the Lammergeier plays a vital role in the mountain ecosystem by disposing of bones and carcasses that other scavengers leave behind.
While not currently endangered, Lammergeier populations are declining due to habitat destruction, poisoning, and human disturbances. The use of veterinary drugs like diclofenac, which has devastated other vulture species, is also a threat to these magnificent birds. Conservation efforts focus on protecting nesting sites, reducing poisoning incidents, and raising awareness about their ecological importance.
At Snowleopard Haven, our guided wildlife expeditions offer a chance to witness the Lammergeier’s breathtaking aerial displays. If you’re lucky, you might even see one drop a bone from the sky—an incredible sight that showcases the intelligence and adaptability of this remarkable bird.
