Snow Leopard Haven is located in Manang section of Annapurna Conservation Area which is rich in montane biodiversity, mostly study area for snow leopard. The Annapurna Conservation Area (established in 1986) in Nepal is globally recognized as a successful model of participatory conservation. Over time, the entire Annapurna region—encircling the Annapurna Himalaya Range—was integrated into this approach.
This participatory model has demonstrated remarkable conservation success. The recovery of forest cover and the increasing presence of wildlife are clear indicators of its impact. In recent years, species such as the snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, and musk deer have been encountered more frequently.
Key conservation efforts in the area include ecosystem restoration, the protection of endangered species—such as the snow leopard, red panda, and musk deer—and an emphasis on biodiversity, making the region ecologically richer. Additionally, cultural conservation and sustainable tourism have played a vital role in furthering development.
Thanks to the innovative strategies implemented by the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) through its Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), this model has gained international recognition. It demonstrates that community empowerment and nature conservation can go hand in hand, rather than being mutually exclusive.
The Annapurna Circuit Trek (ACT) is a globally recognized route among hikers. Manang is one of the most beautiful sections of the ACT. However, beyond the trekking trail, there is much more to explore, including diverse birdlife, mammals, and other natural wonders.
The Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA) is home to 128 species of mammals, 514 species of birds, 348 species of butterflies, and 1,352 species of plants. Notable globally important species found in the ACA include the snow leopard, common leopard, Kashmir musk deer (Moschus cupreus), Himalayan musk deer (M. leucogaster), Himalayan black bear (Ursus thibetanus), red panda (Ailurus fulgens), clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa), and Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla).
Mustang, Manang, Annapurna Sanctuary, Poon Hill, and the Mardi Himal Trek are some of the most famous destinations within the Annapurna Conservation Area.
